History of Westjet Airlines

Westjet Airlines was founded in 1996 by Clive Beddoe and partners. This airline was started based on the low-cost carrier model developed by Morris Air and Southwest Airlines in the United States. The original routes of the airline were located in Western Canada based on which the name was given. In February 1996, the first Westjet flight departed. It was a Boeing 737-200. This airline served cities like Edmonton, Winnipeg, Kelowna, Calgary and Vancouver. At the end of the year, the company added Saskatoon, Victoria and Regina to its network.

Now, it is a low-cost airline in Canada. It provides chartered and scheduled air service to multiple destinations. It is currently the second largest air carrier in Canada. It operates more than 425 flights and carries more than 45,000 passengers in a day.
