It all started in the early 60’s when a group of investors from the fox city raised around $110000 for starting a new airline in the beginning, the airline functioned as an independent commuter air carrier in the year 1965 and started operating I the 23rd of August 1965. It was started just a day after the Outagamie County Regional Airport which was opened to the de Havilland Dove. The main motto behind the foundation of the airline was to connect Appleton with Chicago. In its early day, the airline had a total of 17 employees and just a couple of the Havilland Dove aircraft. As per the August 23, 1965-timetable of Air Wisconsin, the airline was functioning and providing flight tickets between Appleton and Chicago O'Hare Airport with four round trips during the weekdays and two round trips during the Saturdays and Sundays which were operated with the 'Dove twin prop aircraft which is British manufactured. By the mid 70's, the Air Wisconsin was already flying a couple of smaller commuter turboprop airline type which begin at the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter and Swearingen Metro and was also operating an international flight at the Chicago O’ Hare Airport with primary destinations such as Indiana, Michigan and the Wisconsin and several other cities in the Wisconsin.
In 1978, the Civil Aeronautics Board certified the airline. During October 1978, the airline showed an asset of more than $10 million. Under the leadership of Preston H. Wilbourne, who joined the airline as a traffic manager and later became the president, the airline saw growth to more than 29 cities and 32 aircraft which boarded more than 10,000 passengers daily. By 1985, Air Wisconsin has become a large independent regional air carrier which operated British Aerospace Bae 146-200 and the British Aircraft Corporation BAC One-Eleven jets along with the de Havilland Canada DHC-7 Dash 7. United Airlines later bought the company.
