In the year 1970, the Maltese government gave the opportunity to Albert Mizzi to be the chairman of the airline. Later Malta airlines were taken over by the government. Air Malta started its operations with two wet leased Boeing 720Bs that served some of the famous countries such as Rome, Tripoli, London, Manchester, Frankfurt and Paris. Air Malta airlines were very successful in the year 1983. After that, Air Malta bought three new Boeing which was 737-300. They were ordered to Catania and Palermo routes and two new destinations namely Tunis and Monastir.
