South African Airways commonly referred to by the South African Airways code ‘SAA’ began operations on 1 February 1934. The airline was named South African Airways (SAA) and was under the authority of the South African Railways and Harbour administration. In November 1945 SAA declared their new Springbok service as the first inter-continental service. The first flight took 34 hours and started from Palmietfontein, with layovers in Nairobi, Khartoum, Cairo, Castel Benito and Bournemouth. SAA flights operated via Sudan and Egypt.
