The People’s Republic of China had attempted to boycott China Airlines’ international operations by denying the existence of Taipei since China Airlines was carrying the Republic of China flag. To solve this political issue, Mandarin Airlines was established. The first operations started with the direct flights from Taipei to Sydney and then to Vancouver. So, Mandarin Airlines became the first airline of Taiwan to fly to Canada and Australia directly. China Airlines merged Mandarin Airlines with Formosa Airlines in 1999.
China Airlines now own Mandarin Airlines with about 630 employees.
