Leeward Islands Air Transport or LIAT operates mainly in the Caribbean region. It was founded on 20^th October 1956 in the name Leeward Islands Air Transport Services. It functions under the slogan The Caribbean Airline and boasts of 10 aircraft fleet covering 17 prestigious destinations offering excellent domestic flights. LIAT Airlines code is LI (IATA) and LIA (ICAO).

The main base of the airline is at V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua and Barbuda with important functional bases at Grantley Adams International Airport at Bridgetown in Barbados and Piarco International Airport at Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Check-in Baggage: LIAT Airlines baggage policy provides a free allowance of a maximum of 1 baggage to each of its esteemed passengers with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs). LIAT Airlines check-in baggage size is limited to 62 inches (157 cm) for each checked-in baggage. These upper limits of weight and size are levied keeping in mind the efficiency of delivery of cargo as the aircraft have cargo capacity limitations. Infants are entitled to carry free baggage only if they have a seat reserved for them. The Airlines also provides the facility of the luggage being carried in the next flight if not being able to carry one due to the shortage of space.

Cabin Baggage: The LIAT Airlines baggage weight for cabin luggage is limited to 7kgs (15lbs) in weight and (21*14*8) inches in size. Exceeding the set limits of number, size, and weight may lead to an additional charge as decided by the Airlines and upon the availability of space. LIAT Airlines baggage policy has administered these specifications of size and weight for the convenience and easy transportation of its customers.

LIAT Airlines web check-in facility provides a fast, convenient and easy process of check-in to its passengers. The air tickets booking number or confirmation number details are required to select the seats and boarding passes are sent on the registered email account.

LIAT Airlines strongly recommends an airport check-in two hours before the scheduled departure time of your flight and collect their boarding pass. LIAT Airlines check-in process closes 45 minutes prior to the scheduled time of departure of the flight failing which a passenger may be subject to the cancellation of his ticket.

The retired fleet of LIAT boasts of Bombardier Dash 8-300, BAC One-Eleven, Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander, Britten-Norman BN-2A-III Trislander, Hawker Siddeley HS 748 and many more.

Sir Frank Delisle is known to have founded Leewards Islands Air Transport Services on 20 October 1956. In 1957, BWIA acquired 75% of the Airline which enabled a great degree of expansion in terms of better aircraft and increased service area. After being taken over by Court Line in 1971, jet aircraft were incorporated in its fleet for longer distances.

In 1974, the airline was acquired by the governments of 11 Caribbean nations after Court Line declared bankruptcy. After facing a brief downfall, it again gained momentum in the 1980’s with daily operations to premium destinations.

The year of 1995 saw the privatization of LIAT Airlines with the incorporation of some larger and better aircraft added to its fleet. Finally, in January 2007, the airline made a major announcement of its merger with Caribbean Star Airlines into a commercial alliance.
