When it comes to booking train tickets, the Passenger Name Record (PNR) status is one of the most important things to keep track of. It tells you everything you need to know about your booking – whether it’s confirmed, waiting, or still under process.
Understanding the different types of PNR status can help you avoid any last-minute confusion and ensure a smooth journey. 🚂
But sometimes it gets confusing for travellers to understand what exactly these abbreviations mean.
Come, let’s dive into the various PNR statuses and what they mean!
1. CNF (Confirmed)
This is the most sought-after status. If your PNR shows CNF, it means your seat or berth has been confirmed, and you’re all set to board the train on the specified date. No further action is required, and you can travel with peace of mind!
2. WL (Waiting List)
A WL status means that your booking request is on the waiting list. You haven’t been assigned a seat yet, and you’ll have to wait for cancellations or berth availability. The higher your WL number, the lesser the chances of getting a confirmed seat. (Book trains on Paytm with Guaranteed Seat Assistance & get a confirmed train ticket).
3. RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation)
An RAC status means you’re one step away from a confirmed seat. If you see RAC on your PNR, you have been allotted a seat, but not a full berth. It essentially means that if passengers with confirmed bookings cancel, you’ll get a full berth. Until then, you will have to share the seat with another RAC holder. While it’s not as comfortable as being confirmed, it’s better than being on the waiting list!
4. TQWL (Tatkal Waiting List)
If you booked a Tatkal ticket and see TQWL on your PNR, it indicates you’re on the Tatkal waiting list. This is a specific type of waiting list, where tickets are booked under the Tatkal quota for urgent travel. Since Tatkal bookings get priority over regular waiting list passengers, there is a good chance that the status will change to Confirmed as long as there are cancellations in the Tatkal quota.
5. CKWL (Class Waiting List)
This status is similar to the regular waiting list but applies to passengers who booked in a specific class, like First AC, Second AC, Sleeper, etc. CKWL means your booking is waiting for cancellation in your particular class. Keep in mind that if other passengers cancel their bookings in the same class, your chances of getting a confirmed seat increase.
6. GNWL (General Waiting List)
This is the most common type of waiting list status. GNWL stands for General Waiting List, and if your PNR status is GNWL, it means your booking is pending. As with other waiting lists, if someone cancels their booking, you might be allotted a seat. The chances of getting confirmed depend on the number of cancellations and the time left before your journey.
7. RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List)
If you’re travelling from a less popular station, your PNR may show RLWL. This indicates a waiting list specifically for remote stations. Passengers on RLWL tickets are usually allotted seats from less congested routes or lower-demand zones. It’s not uncommon for this status to change to Confirmed as the departure date approaches and cancellations come through from passengers travelling from more prominent stations.
8. PQWL (Pooled Quota Waiting List)
PQWL is a waiting list for passengers who are travelling on a pooled quota. This could be a combination of several trains, so cancellations may happen across various trains. The chances of confirmation are lower compared to other types of waiting lists, but the seat may still get confirmed if the quota is pooled between different trains.
9. CAN (Cancelled)
If you see CAN on your PNR, it means the ticket has been cancelled. Simple!
10. NOSB (No Seat/Berth)
NOSB stands for No Seat Berth, which is a special booking option available for children under the age of 12. This status is assigned when the child does not need a full seat while travelling. Typically, this is offered at half the price of an adult ticket. Passengers with NOSB status can board the train but are required to share their seats with their parents or guardians.
