Emirates Airlines backed by the royal family of Dubai came into the scene when Gulf Air began to cut short its services in Dubai. All of this happened in the mid of the 1980s, and due to Gulf Air's negligence, Emirates Airlines had a huge market to capture. It is to be remembered that, Pakistan International Airlines played a vital role in providing technical assistance and emergency backup to support the growth of Emirates Airlines. Pakistan International Airlines also provided the Airbus A300B4-200 and a brand-new Boeing 737–300 in the following years. With the backing of the royal family of Dubai, Emirates Airlines bagged another Boeing 727–200 and it completed its first flight, known as the flight EK600, from Dubai to Karachi on October 25th, 1985. Then, Emirates Airlines roped in many experienced and top executives to oversee the functions of the company. One such individual was Maurice Flanagan, who was appointed as the chief executive officer of Emirates Airlines. During the first year of Emirates Airlines operation, it carried more than two hundred fifty thousand passengers and freight of ten thousand tons. Because of this huge shift in business, Gulf Air suffered a massive 56 percent reduced profit that year and followed it with a loss the next year. Emirates Airlines became a superpower in this business, as they were the fastest growing airline in the world. The increased revenue touched hundred million US dollars every passing year and approached the five hundred million US dollar mark in the next year. It carried almost two million people and sixty-eight tons of cargo every year. In 1998, Emirates Airlines purchased 46 percent stake in SriLankan Airlines by paying seventy million US dollars.
