Exploring Darjeeling

Latest in the list of cities covered is the small little city of Darjeeling – one of the most amazing cities to be explored this winter. Be dazzled by the amazing snowy peaks of Kanchenjunga overlooking the hill town. You can even explore the many picturesque tea gardens, the pine trees and just relax in the calmness of this city. A must-fun thing to do when you’re in this town is to go on the Himalayan toy train! Here are some of the best things to do in Darjeeling:

1. Tea Plantations

The world-famous Darjeeling tea is made here! Explore the beautiful tea plantations when in the city. There are around 86 gardens that you can explore. Make sure to take the guided tour and see exactly how the tea is made right from the plucking of tea leaves stage. You can even get to taste the fresh tea for just Rs 5.

2. Darjeeling Toy Train

One of the most fun activities to do around here, the Darjeeling toy train is a must-visit! . It is an outstanding engineering marvel, noted for being the best example of a hill passenger railway. This is also a World Heritage by UNESCO. You can take this 83 km long journey from Darjeeling to Siliguri if you wish to explore all the sights of this beautiful, meandering way! En route, the train passes through many loops, the prominent one being the Batasia Loop, where the toy train makes a 360 degree turn. This will be one to remember!

3. Ghoom Monastery

Built in 1875 by  lama called Sherab Gyatso, is located 8 km away from the city. Here you will see a Buddha statue marvel, Maitreya Buddha, believed to be ‘The Buddha to Come’. This statue is a whopping 15 feet in height.  A great way to explore the Buddhist culture here in Darjeeling.

4. Tiger Hill

The highest point in the town, this is an ideal place to see the mesmerising sunrise of Kanchenjunga Range. When the sun hits the range, you will see it turn into all hues of colours. It’s a truly gorgeous sight to witness! You can even go hiking and trekking from here.

How To Reach Darjeeling

The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is 95 km away from the city. You can take a flight if you’re coming from any metro city. From Bagdogra airport, cabs on hire are easily available that can take you to Darjeeling in around 3 hours.
