Dog owners constantly have to think about how their furry friend is doing back home when they are travelling. Now, thanks to many pet-friendly hotels, resorts and cafes; travelling with dogs has become easier. If you are travelling with your pet, here are some things you need to know:
Flying your pet on airlines
Usually the pets have to travel either as excess baggage or as a part of the cargo. Only guide dogs are allowed in the cabin with passengers. Air India allows pets in the cabin, if the weight of your pet and your bags are below 5 kgs. You may be charged a flat fee for carrying your pet onboard.
Airlines such as Jet Airways, Air India, Vistara and Spicejet allow pets onboard whereas IndiGo and AirCosta allow pets that are along with persons with disabilities. So, do check before booking a flight, to avoid issues later. Pets that are below 8 weeks old are not allowed to fly. The same goes for pregnant animals and females with unweaned offspring. Certain animal breeds and their cross breeds are not allowed on board, such as aggressive dog breeds (for obvious reasons), short-muzzled dog breeds (for health reasons), and a few cat breeds.
In order to fly, you will need to put your pet in a cage. Fortunately, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has laid down guidelines, keeping your pet’s safety and comfort in mind. The crates are pre-approved and will provide enough space for the pet to lay down, sleep, and turn around. The should be well ventilated and leak-proof as well. Buy your crate in advance and make sure your pet is comfortable in it.
Train travel
Train travel is a healthier option for pets and the Indian Railways allows dogs and other pets to travel with you. This is only if you are travelling in First Class or other Air Conditioned Classes. Also, to take your pet with you, you need to book the two- or four-berth area entirely. Dogs can also be carried in luggage trains. In trains, if someone objects to your dogs, you will have to move your pooch to a luggage train .
Staying with your pets
Make sure that your hotel is pet friendly. If you’re travelling with a dog, make sure the hotel has a big area to play. Resorts with lawns or beaches are the best. Also ensure that your pet doesn’t cause disturbance to other guests.
Keep these things in mind and you will surely have a comfortable travel experience with your pet!
