Southern Railway Reintroduces Rameswaram-Coimbatore Train Link After A Decade

The Southern Railway is all set to reintroduce the only direct train link between Rameswaram and Palakkad, which had discontinued its services a decade ago. Due to track constraints at Palakkad, the train is to be operated till Coimbatore.

The train had stopped its services in 2008 owing to the gauge conversion of the Palani-Pollachi-Palakkad railway line. This has affected pilgrims and tourists who have been travelling on the railway route for three decades. Though the railway link was relaunched in 2015, it was still not completely utilised. Only Tiruchendur-Palakkad passenger train and Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram Amrita Express were running in this section.

The lack of connectivity between Madurai and Coimbatore however caught the attention of the MPs.  After the intervention of the MPs due to the lack of connectivity between Madurai and Coimbatore, the discontinued train link is now getting fully functional. As per the new proposal, the trains would leave Rameswaram at 10.30PM and reach Coimbatore at 8AM.

Apart from this Southern Railway train, there are proposals that include incorporation of fast passenger train services between Thoothukudi and Coimbatore, extension of the Intercity Express services between Mangalore and Coimbatore, and the introduction of a new overnight train connecting Bangalore and Coimbatore.
