Most of the Indian transportation used to run on rail. Indian railways has played an important part in the development of India. It still is one of the major means of transport for a lot of people. Mostly due to its affordability and connectivity all over India. If you love trains, there are some amazing rail museums all over India which you can explore. Here are some:

National Rail Museum, Delhi

Located in Chanakyapuri, Delhi, the National Rail museum focuses on the rail heritage of India. You can even take a ride on the toy trains on regular days. It’s great for kids to learn more about Indian railways. They have a vast outdoor and indoor gallery as well.

Railway Museum, Mysore

Mysore

This museum has an outdoor exhibit of vintage locomotives. If you want to see the growth and development of railways in India, you can see here with the help of photographs and exhibits which are displayed. The museum also has a battery operated mini-train which gives a short ride to children around the area. You can even have a look at the fancy Austin rail car.  It was used for carrying inspection officials on the train track.

Regional Railway Museum, Chennai

Here you can see a rich exhibit of vintage coaches such as Ooty trains. Most of the older models were made by the Britishers only. Here also you can take a short ride on the toy train. You can also check out the renovated indoor art gallery.

Railway Heritage Centre, Tiruchirapalli

Tiruchirapalli

The railway heritage centre is a railway museum plus heritage centre. A lot of South India’s railway celebrations take place here as well. You can see old artefacts, photographs and rare documents that are kept here. You can also observe the developments of the south Indian railway development in this railway museum.

Joshi’s Museum of Miniature railways, Pune

Pune

This is a miniature railway museum located in Karve road locality in Pune. Here you can see working models of various types of trains. Bhausaheb Joshi built this museum and started working on the concept in 1960s.
