Winters is the best time to explore the snow in the Northern hill stations. But before making elaborate plans, make sure that the place is not close due to heavy snow! Here are some places that are closed in winters:

Leh & Ladakh

Though this is always on top on everyone’s bucket list these days, one should avoid this destination during the winters. The freezing cold temperatures that are here are insane, they go as low as -30 degrees. So not only will it be tough to acclimatise here, but also living in such sub zero temperatures is not at all easy. Hence, it’s best to avoid Leh & Ladhakh in winters.

Gangtok

Gangtok

Sikkim is one of the most beautiful states to visit in India. However, it gets extremely cold in winters as the temperatures hover around 4 degrees. Though, it doesn’t commonly snow in Gangtok, however higher altutude tourist places like Tsomgo lake and Nathula Pass often get closed due to heavy snow. You will find a huge problem of fog as well in this city during winters, which is why it’s best avoided to travel here in winters.

Kedarnath

Uttarakhand is often termed as the land of Gods. Being one of India’s biggest pilgrim centres, Kedarnath attracts many people all year round. However, the floods of 2013 made it clear that  growing number of tourists may not be good for the region. It also snows very badly in such high altitudes where Kedarnath is located. Hence, it’s best to avoid such places in winters!

Srinagar

“Heaven On Earth”, is what Kashmir is called! The unreal Dal lake surrounded by tall Himalayas and the evergreen gardens; Srinagar is a great place to visit. However, during the months of December and January, many roads leading to Srinagar like the Jammu-Srinagar highway is also closed. If you want to go to Leh from here, that route is also closed due to heavy snowfall. Even the Dal lake is absolutely frozen in winters here. Hence, it’s best to visit this place in the months of summers.

So, this year, travel smart and bring in the New Year at a place where you will really enjoy!
