It also stands out for housing some of the rarest natural wonders of north east, like the Mawlynnong Waterfall, which is a sight to behold, pushing its way through lush vegetation and descending into clear waters below.
Laitlum Canyon – Love trekking? Well, then Laitlum Canyon must make it to your bucket list of north east trekking expeditions. It’s important to know the local guidelines before the trek as the terrain can be a bit difficult to manoeuvre. The panoramic view from the top and the incomprehensibly unending stretch of space on all four sides make this trek an unforgettable experience.
Double Decker Living Root Bridge – One of the most unique naturally formed structures, that stands strongly since its inception and is frequented by travellers from around the world, Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Cherapunjee, is a must visit. However, if you are faint-hearted then think twice before trekking till the bridge. After about 2000 slippery steps down the moss covered stairs, the bridge comes into one’s line of sight. This incredible bridge is one of the best places to visit in Meghalaya.
Umiam Lake – If you plan to visit Umiam Lake in the winter time, from October to February, you’ll be dumbfounded by its beauty. If you plan to visit it in the summer months of May to July, you won’t believe it’s the same lake. Umiam Lake is basically made from the reservoir built due to the dam here. The lake is the chief source of water supply to the city of Shillong that is also known as ‘Scotland of the East’.
Elephant Falls – The sheer gold glow of water at the Elephant Falls is just majestic. Located at Shillong, the Elephant Falls are an amalgamation of three magnificent falls – the first one, hidden among the trees; the second one, tamed and controlled, flowing from a certain height, and the third, the fastest and biggest one, culminating into the stream below. Unfortunately, the structure of the black rocks resembling an elephant was destroyed during an earthquake but the falls are equally picturesque, with the lucid contrast of the frothy falls against the dark rocks. The natural beauty and serenity of these falls just wins hearts over.
Siju Cave – The Siju Cave is the first limelighted natural cave in India, also known as the Bat Cave, owing to the abundance of these nocturnal mammals here. The Cave remains one of the chief source of observing natural phenomenon among cave researchers. Also noteworthy, is the limestone formations and the imposing stalagmites and stalactites which is a source of major water bodies of the region.

The nearest airport and railway station that are well connected to cities and town across the country, are located in Guwahati. To reach Meghalaya from Guwahati, you can opt for a bus or a cab. It will be ideal to take precautions while driving during monsoons.
