Indian Railways soon introduces Khadi Express, a train dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi! Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) announced recently of this new train that is all set to hit the rails in a couple of months.
This special train is said to have eight coaches. One of them will showcase a display of Gandhiji’s messages, quotes, paintings and other items related to his life journey. Another coach will be solely for the sale of khadi products at various stations.
One of the coaches of the train would have a live demonstration of how khadi is spun on the spinning wheel, reminiscing the way Gandhiji promoted the use of handwoven khadi among rural India, rather than using the industrially-manufactured fabric introduced by the British.
The Khadi Express would halt one or two days at places that had relevance in Gandhiji’s life. It also covers the places where he stayed during the Freedom Struggle. The train route would start at Porbandar, the birthplace of Gandhi, and would cover places that include Sabarmati, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Wardha, along with several other stations. A minimum of 20 stations are being targeted so far for the train route.
Similarly, a new train named ‘Samanta Express’ is set to start its journey from Nagpur from February 14th 2019. This train is, however, dedicated to the life of Dr. B R Ambedkar.
