Apparently, the railway board had asked all the railway zones to identify potential and feasible railway routes to run the privately operated trains. Following the process, this plan will have intercity trains operating on 14 routes, while serving 10 long distance, overnight and suburban routes.

The identified routes for long distances include Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chennai, Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Jammu/Katra, Howrah-Chennai, Mumbai-Chennai, Secunderabad-Delhi, Howrah-Mumbai and Secunderabad-Hyderabad. The intercity routes include Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Bangalore, Delhi-Amritsar, Chennai-Coimbatore, Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai-Pune and Chennai-Madurai. The suburban routes chosen for the private train services include trains that operate in cities such as Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Secunderabad.

The first private operated train, Tejas Express, is to start operations on the Delhi-Lucknow route on 5th October 2019. The bookings are open for the train, and the passengers are to be provided by enhanced train travel experience.
