Thiksey Monastery, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir
The grand Thiksey Monastery is located in the hills of Ladakh. This is one of the largest monasteries in the region. This monastery has great architecture and is set against a very picturesque background. With 12 floors and numerous temples within, the monastery serves as a home to 120 monks and nuns. This monastery is a popular spot for tourists. The 40 feet Buddha statue is the highlight of this monastery.
Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery, Coorg, Karnataka
Located in the Bylakuppe region, near Mysore, this monastery was established by Pema Norbu Rinpoche. The monastery is also called the “Golden Temple” which houses three captivating golden statues, namely of Buddha, Padmasambhava, and Amitayus. Each statue is about the height of 40 feet. This temple is said to be the largest teaching centre Nyingmapa which is a prime a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The intricate golden carvings and stunning architecture, makes this place a must visit.
Tabo Monastery, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh
Situated in the enchanting Spiti Valley, the Tabo Monastery lies to the left bank of the Spiti River. This is one of the oldest monasteries in India, Rinchen Sangpo laid the foundation of this monastery in India in 996 AD. Lot of paintings can be found here on the walls and ceilings. Many caves also surround the monastery which is why this is called ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’. The monastery has a total of 9 temples and one of these 9 temples holds the holy ‘Wheel of Law’.
Urguelling Monastery, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
Although Arunachal is well known for its Tawang Monastery, the Urguelling Monastery is also pretty spectacular. Located close to Tawang town, Urguelling Monastery dates back to the 15th century. This is today a single- temple complex which provides housing to monks.
