Due to runway closure at Delhi Airport, there has been an increase in cancellations and rescheduling of flights, leading to four times increase in last-minute fares on flights to key routes out of Delhi.
Number of runways have closed for maintenance. As per reports, if an evening flight is cancelled, passengers booked on the flight, are shifted to night flights. Due to this, filling of seats in the night flight and a demand-supply mismatch happens, which further leads to spike in fares
About 300 flights have been cancelled due to the closure of runway 29 – the longest runway at Delhi Airport that caters primarily to flights using Terminal 3.
As per a report, direct flights between Delhi to Mumbai were down to 18 from 37 flights a day. Number of flights from Delhi to Bengaluru was reduced by 5 flights a day. Delhi to Kolkata and Delhi to Hyderabad flights saw daily direct flights reduce by 4 and 3, respectively.
One of the three runways at Delhi Airport will be closed for three days starting from Tuesday due to maintenance work. On November 7th, Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Runway 11/29 was closed from 12 AM.
