Barsana
Barsana in Uttar Pradesh is famous for Lathmar Holi. The villages of Barsana and Nandgaon near Mathura celebrate Holi by replicating some events from the Puranas. Men are beaten up by women during the celebrations, while men are allowed to shield themselves from the blows received. Following this, sweets are thrown at each other along with singing hymns of Krishna and Radha. The Holi sights here are something to marvel!
Shantiniketan
Holi is more of a cultural festival in Shantiniketan of West Bengal. Holi is popularly called as Basantha Utsav here, which means the Spring Festival. The celebrations we see here today were started by Rabindranath Tagore at his university Shantiniketan in Kolkata. The students of the university dress up in saffron and enjoy Holi by getting drenched in colours and dancing to music and singing hymns. Visitors are allowed to be a part of these celebrations.
Jaipur
Jaipur is one of the cities in India known for its Holi celebrations. Some of the attractions of the festival here are folk dance performances, tug-of-war, elephant beauty contest and colours thrown on each other throughout the festivities. Holi was earlier known as Elephant Festival here, due to the events related to elephants during Holi celebrations.
Kumaon
Kumaon in Uttarakhand celebrates Holi differently. The festival is marked with music performances and concerts where musicians perform songs based on various ragas at temple premises. The artists wear traditional attires to perform these, and for the colours, the place uses only natural colours like ash and extracts from flowers.
