If a layover in Colombo is a part of your travel itinerary, don’t think twice! Get a transit visa and explore this beautiful city.
Sri Lanka’s beauty has been written about again and again – thousands of tourists from across the world throng this unworldly destination. We went on a short trip to Colombo, and if we say that this idyllic coastal city is stunning, it wouldn’t be anything new; but in many ways, Colombo surprised us, and made us experience the unexpected.
The city is impeccably clean. Yes, it’s difficult to spot even a spec of trash on the streets. The scrumptious local food would win over your heart but most importantly, it’s Sri Lanka’s hospitality and incredible culture that you must visit this country for. Being a tourist in the Lankan Island is an incredible experience – locals are extremely approachable. If people smile at you and ask your whereabouts, don’t get paranoid; get used to it because it’s the usual Sri-Lankan-way of welcoming you to their homeland.
In Colombo, every building tells a story; every street reflects the country’s rich culture and heritage. On your brief visit to Colombo, do visit these places to make your trip extraordinary:
Negombo
Located about 10 kilometres away from Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo, is this small, modest beach town. Negombo gives you a peek into Sri Lanka’s simplicity and traditions. The beach is great for a sunset stroll, and the town has a European touch owing to its history. Negombo was one of the most important sources of cinnamon during the Dutch era until the British took it from them in 1796.
This island town is known for its fish market. The stinky market may turn your stomach but if you are brave enough to march into this smelly territory then the variety and vastness of this market would surprise you. When in Negombo, do visit St. Mary’s Church, Hamilton Canal, Dutch Fort, and Buddhist pilgrimage sites that are centres of spiritual awakening.
Galle Face Beach
Colombo is world-famous for its gorgeous beaches on the western coast and most travellers briefly stop here before heading west. There are plenty of things to do in Colombo but if you do not have a lot of time, just unwind at the Galle Face Beach. The deep blue waters and the unending stretch of palm trees are a sight to behold.
Do eat at one of Colombo’s local restaurant to savour Sri Lanka’s rich flavours, and also try the much-popular Ceylon Tea. You can also take an evening stroll at the Galle Fort Market to get a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s arts and crafts, and ensure that you bargain to your heart’s content. And how would you like to end the day? Nothing is better than Sri Lanka’s authentic Ayurvedic massage.
